What type of printer do I need for general ROSI printing?
Generic ROSI printing can be done on a printer that is either PCL5, PCL6 or PostScript compatible, BUT there are many custom applications in ROSI that send PostScript ONLY. For ROSI printing, we would recommend a printer be both PCL AND PostScript capable, and ask for it to be set up in ROSI as a PCL printer. More printer information can be found at: http://www.utoronto.ca/wts/printing
How do I tell whether a printer I want to buy is PCL or PostScript capable?
Check the printer specifications on the manufacturer's website. If you see PCL5, PCL6 or PostScript then your printer is compatible while all three specifications will ensure full compatibility. If you see GDI or Host Based, then you should check out a different model.
Most inkjet printers are not AMS or ROSI capable. Most Brother printers are not AMS or ROSI capable (usually host based). Many low end personal printers are host based or GDI printers to reduce costs and are therefore not AMS or ROSI capable.
Network printers provide the most stable AMS and ROSI printing for end users. While it is possible to print to a local printer via a USB or LPT port, printing directly to a network printer via the built-in network port is more reliable because network printers rarely get reconfigured where PC's do and often printing stops until the AMS/ROSI settings are updated to match the changes made on the PC.
topWhat type of printer do I need for Fees Invoice printing?
Most ROSI users will not be printing fees invoices. Only a few offices will be printing fees invoices. The fees invoices have been developed in PostScript and therefore a PostScript compatible printer is required.
In addition to PostScript compatibility, you also need the Architext OCR-A PostScript font installed. We have tested Fees Invoice Printing on HP LaserJet 4000, Lexmark Optra S 1855 printers.
The printer must be equipped with a Flash memory module in order to store the OCR-A font permanently on the printer. For the HP 4000 this is the C4287A 4MB Flash DIMM. For the Lexmark Optra S 1855 this is the 45H0022 4MB Flash memory. Alternatively, a printer hard disk can be used. Other PostScript printers with flash or hard disk storage for fonts should also work but have not been tested.
The required OCR-A font has been licensed by EASI.
You can get the Registration Form for OCR-A Font License (PDF) from this web site.
What type of printer do I need for Candidate Selection List printing?
Most ROSI users will not need to print Candidate Selection Lists. Candidate Selection List printing is also a PostScript application and has been tested on HP 4000 and Lexmark Optra S 1855 printers. Candidate Selection List printing uses legal sized paper and on the tested printers it will request the user to put legal paper in the printer if it finds no legal paper available. No flash memory or special fonts are required for Candidate Selection List printing.
topHow do I get my printer configured for ROSI printing?
You can request a printer configuration for direct printing from the ROSI system at: http://www.utoronto.ca/wts/printing
topHow do I find out what my printer designation is?
If you are unsure what your printer's name is you can e-mail Terry Jones at CNS and he can tell you what printer login id is configured for your use.
A printer list used by graduate units is also available.
topWhy can't I see my printer in the Destination list on the Print Job Submission screen?
Not all printers have been added to the pop-up selection list either because they are new or because it was unclear to which department they belonged. Even if your printer name does not appear on the list, you can simply key in the name in the Destination field.
If you wish to have a printer added to the list, or to have a printer associated with a Userid as the default print destination, you can have your Divisional Access Control Representative provide your Userid and printer destination information to ROSI Help.
topWill I be able to print out fee invoices?
We support the HP4000N/TN LaserJet printer with a font package containing a Postscript OCR-A font. The printer configuration should include:
• 8MB of memory
• A JetDirect card with an IP address which must be defined to ROSI (see question below)
• A font package containing the Postscript OCR-A font, which can be stored on either a flash memory module or a hard drive on the printer. To get OCR-A Font from EASI, you need to fill out the Registration Form for OCR-A Font License (PDF)
Will ROSI know and recognize my local printer?
Your default local printer will need to be defined by the Workgroup Technology Support group. For more information, please see http://www.utoronto.ca/wts/printing
topMy printer designation is correct, so why don't I get any output?
1. Check that the ROSI print job executed successfully if you are familiar with ISPF; otherwise, contact ROSI Help
2. If you have a network printer, then ensure that your IP address is correct
3. If you have set an access control list on the printer that restricts hosts that are allowed to print to the printer, you must add emma.utcc.utoronto.ca to the access control list
4. If your printer is connected directly to your PC and not to the network, then you will need to have a special piece of software called SAPLPD running on your computer in order for the printer to be able to receive ROSI print jobs.
I have a local printer and am running SAPLPD, but I still don't get any output. Why?
1. Check that the ROSI print job executed successfully. See 9a above.
2. Make sure that the IP address for your computer is still the one that is set for SAPLPD.
3. Ensure that your firewall has the proper permission set up for the SAPLPD program. (NTVD.EXE should be listed as an exception in the Windows XP firewall or TCP port 515 should be listed as a port exception.)
4. Ensure you are using the most recent version of SAPLPD
5. Check that the printer port has not changed for the printer. SAPLPD relies on the port name. USB printers are prone to changing port names as new printers arrive or as the USB cable moves from port to port. A script at http://download.utoronto.ca/plist.vbs will tell you what the real port name is for each printer you have defined.
My output still won't print. What should I do?
ROSI print jobs are directed to the primary or default printer tray. If your job is not printing, then check to make sure that the primary or default tray is not empty even if the other trays are full. It may simply be waiting for more paper to proceed with the print job.
